How the Sea Level app handles your information: local data, no account, no ads, no analytics.
Scope
This policy explains how the Sea Level app ("we", "the app") handles your information. It applies only to this app. Questions can be sent any time to the contact address at the end of this page.
Information we collect
Precise location: when you grant location permission, the app uses your device GPS to determine your current elevation. Location is used while the app is open and, if you enable background warnings in Settings, during optional 2-hour background tracking sessions: the app checks for elevation warnings while closed. Elevation results: the calculated elevation and the recent coordinates used to compute it are stored locally on your device in a cache file.
How we use your information
The app uses your location to show your current elevation, to simulate what your area would look like if all ice melted (70 m / 230 ft sea-level rise), and to deliver the optional elevation warnings you enable in Settings. There is no account, no advertising and no analytics SDK of any kind.
Third-party services
To compute elevation from your coordinates, the app sends your latitude and longitude to the public elevation service open-elevation.com (https://api.open-elevation.com). The request contains your coordinates only: no name, no email, no device identifier and no other personal information is attached.
Data storage and retention
Elevation data is cached locally on your device only. The cache can be cleared by deleting the app or clearing the app cache in your device settings. No server-side database or analytics backend stores your data.
Permissions
Location (foreground): used to determine your elevation. If you deny this permission, the app cannot show your elevation. Background location (optional): used only for background warning sessions you enable in Settings; on iOS this requires the "Allow Always" option, on Android "Allow all the time", and a session runs for 2 hours then stops automatically. Notifications (optional): used only for the optional elevation-warning notification you can turn on in Settings; notifications are generated locally, no push service is used.
Children's privacy
The app is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Your choices
You can revoke location permission at any time in your device settings. You can disable notifications in the app Settings tab or in your device settings. Uninstalling the app removes all locally stored data.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, the effective date at the top of this page will be updated, and the revised policy applies to the current version of the app from that date.
